چکیده

Stellar fluxes from the 2MASS catalog are used to remove the contribution due to Galactic stars from the intensity measured by DIRBE in 13 regions in the North and South Galactic polar caps. Allowing for a constant calibration factor between the DIRBE 3.5 μm intensity and the 2MASS 2.2 μm fluxes gives very small pixel-pixel scatter. After subtracting the interplanetary and Galactic foregrounds, a residual intensity of 16.1 ± 4 kJy sr or 13.8 ± 3.4 nW m sr at 3.5 μm is found. A similar analysis at 2.2 μm gives a residual intensity of 17.6± 4.4 kJy sr or 24± 6 nW m sr. The intercepts of the DIRBE minus 2MASS correlation at 1.25 μm show more scatter and are a much smaller fraction of the foreground, leading to a weak limit on the CIRB of 10.1 ± 7.4 kJy sr or 24.3 ± 18 nW m sr (1 σ). Fluxes are measured for the DA white dwarf plus brown dwarf pair GD 1400 with the Infrared Array Camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope. GD 1400 displays an infrared excess over the entire 3 − 8µm region consistent with the presence of a mid-to late-type L dwarf companion. A discussion is given regarding current knowledge of this unique system.

The global star formation rate (SFR) density is estimated from the star formation histories (SFHs) of Local Group galaxies. This is found to be broadly consistent with estimates of the global SFH from existing redshift surveys for two favoured cosmologies. It also provides additional evidence for a relatively constant global SFR density at high redshift (z > 1).
